French Makalu Expedition 2008 Spring - Ludovic Challeat

Bourgine, Challeat, Coudurier, Maural, Pemba Sherpa, Nil Prasad Gurung, Lhakpa Tangdel, Dorchi, Jaya Prakash Rai and Phurba left C4 at 5 am on 18 May. Challeat and Pemba reached summit at 11 am stayed there an hour. Both descended to C4. Bourgine and Maurel summited at 12:30 pm with Dorchi, Jaya and Phurba. They stayed on summit around 15 minutes then descended to C4. Coudurier and Nil reached summit at 2 pm, stayed on summit about 10 minutes, then descended to C4. Lhakpa Tangdel turned around from 8200m to C4 as he was very slow. Pemba, Dorchi, Jaya Prakash and Phurba went down to C3 slept there next day to BC. Members and Lhakpa Wangdel and Nil Prasad slept at C4. Next day to C3. Nil Prasad Gurung stayed with his friend (climbing teacher) Lhakpa who was with British expedition at their C4 400m. Lhakpa told Pemba that Nil slept around midnight and around 2 am of 20th when Lhakpa returned from toilet he found Nil dead. The body was buried about 50m below 7400m under a big rock.

Detry suffered from cerebral edema and evacuated by helicopter from BC on 23 April; he climbed up to 6200m.

De Fouchier was homesick and Segonne was very weak, both left BC on 24 April; both climbed up to 6200m.

Dreyer, Rosset and Wojcik were exhausted; Dreyer and Rosset climbed up to 6900m; Wojcik climbed up to 7400m.

The team trekked down to Yangri Kharka and took helicopter to Taplejung from there by plane to Kathmandu on 26 May and left on 27 May.

Fixed rope: contributed 400m.
