Ionut Stefanescu is the first Romanian climber who managed to reach the peak of the Baruntse in the Himalayas, a feat he achieved this year on November 5.
The team which included Ionut Stefanescu, Marin Amarinei, Stefan Teodoru, Adrian Laza, Iulian Petre and Ciprian Chelariu has planned to reach first on Mera Peak, at 6475m. Then the group would split into two: Marin Amarinei, Ionut Stefanescu, Ciprian Chelariu and Stefan Teodoru to reach Baruntse (7162m), while Adrian Laza and Iulian Petre to aim for Island Peak (6189m).
Because of the harsh conditions and problems of acclimatization, the team plans were thwarted. In turn, Stefan Teodoru, Marin Amarinei and Ciprian Chelariu left the team, so Ionut Stefanescu remained alone to reach peak Baruntse. Stefanescu reached its peak on November 5 at 9:45, along with three Austrian climbers [Stephan Wijnkamp team]. .
