The team of two members arrived at BC on 13 April. On the 18th the fatal avalanche struck Sherpas in the Icefall at 6:45 am, and Joby Ogwyn immediately concluded that his intended flight from the summit wearing a wingsuit would not be possible as planned, that the climbing situation would not be resolved very soon, and he prepared to leave the mountain quickly because of a crowded schedule of obligations for the rest of the year. On the 20th, he and Garrett Madison walked down to Gorak Shep, and from here Ogwyn flew to Kathmandu by helicopter and left Nepal.

Madison stayed. He went into Icefall on the 18th and 19th and joined the effort to rescue the Sherpas buried by the avalanche including three with his own team, Dorje Khatri, Phur Temba Sherpa and Thendorje Sherpa, whose bodies were recovered from the debris. They had been carrying loads up to C1, the first of this team's load carriers above BC.

By the 23rd it was clear that no climbing on the mountain would be possible this season. Some agitating Sherpas had presented 13 demands before they would agree to the resumption of climbing. He left BC on the 28th, visited Thendorje's family at Pangboche and continued to Lukla to fly to Kathmandu.
