The team first went to Lobuche East to acclimatize and all nine members summited it on 22 April. But one member, Wang Hai-Cheng, developed a serious case of cerebral edema when he reached the summit and was unable to stand up and was semi-conscious. He recovered at a lower altitude.

BC was occupied on 23 April. The next day the members rested and on the 25th they began a period of training in mountaineering. A week earlier, on the 18th, the fatal avalanche had struck, and Sherpas and foreign climbers had started to leave the mountain. On the 26th Liu consulted with his trekking agent, Temba of Dreamer's Destination, who advised canceling the climb, and that evening Liu called off their climbing plans although the training program at BC continued into early May. Liu planned to return to Everest the following year.

None of the members set foot above BC, but two of his team's six Sherpas went up to C2 to clear that camp. They abandoned their gear at C1.

By this time, on the 25th, Liu had seen from BC a huge avalanche rush down a couloir on Everest's West Shoulder; he also saw masses of ice hanging on the shoulder appearing ready to crash down too.
