On 19 May, Payan went up to C3 at 4 pm to rest, and at 10 pm (CST) he and Lhakpa Gelu left for the summit in strong wind. They reached the top at 9 am on the 20th, stayed ther for only five minutes before descending to C3 at about 8:30 pm.

Payan became wind-blinded at the Third Step (about 8700m) on his way down, so it took him nearly 12 hours to get back to C3. "Its a miracle I got there safely," safely he said. Later he was given some eye-drops by a Sherpa with the Swiss expedition led by Kari Kobler, and his vision was restored in a few hours.

He and Lhakpa Gelu returned to ABC on the 21st.
