The expedition spent a week or so after arriving at ABC acclimatizing on the mountain; going up to higher altitudes, descending to rest, and going higher still and going down to rest. They established their C1 on 4 May and C2 on 9 May.

On 10 May, Leitner and Meschik went to the site for C3 at 7513m and pitched a tent there, then returned to C2 for the night. On the 11th the two Austrians and Chuldim Sherpa went to the site to occupy C3; they rested there, but wind was too strong for them to stay; it was blowing at more than 100 km/hr that night.

C3's site was the team's high point. They abandoned their attempt to scale Cho Oyu that same day, the 11th. Besides the fierce wind, there was some snowfall, and fog obscured the way ahead. Furthermore, the surface underfoot was hard blue ice, and no rope had been fixed above the Yellow Band. They left the mountain on 15 May.

Note: The team found a body at 6400m just below their C1, which they believed to be that of a Greek climber who, they said, died in his tent 2010 [possibly the German Henning who died in 2011] . It was not a pleasant sight: the body was now exposed and birds were picking at it.
