The consular section of the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu refused to endorse Tortladze's visa for entry into China/Tibet. Perhaps it was because he had a diplomatic passport (he was a member of Georgia's parliament in 2006) as well as an ordinary passport.

Tortladze waited in Kathmandu for six days for permission to enter Tibet to climb Cho Oyu. When it was still not granted, he gave up and went home.
