BC at normal site
C1 at top of Icefall
C2 in Western Cwm
C3 on West Face
C4 at Yellow Band, where Everest & Lhotse routes diverge
High point on West Face.
The team struggled to get to C1 because of bad weather. On 17 September, when they were trying to go up from BC to establish C1 at the top of the Khumbu Icefall, they entered the Icefall but soon could see nothing more than five or ten meters away from them. They couldn't see the fixed ropes. They couldn't move forward, couldn't retreat. They were stuck at 5800m, 200 meters below the top, and had to spend the night there. The next day they got to C1, and on the following day they returned to BC.
They started up again after a period of bad weather. On 6 October, they moved from BC to C2. The next day they made temporary C4 at 7400m because they couldn't reach the normal C4 site with the heavy loads they were carrying (they had no Sherpas with them). They got there on the 8th and made C4 at 7600m at the Yellow Band where the climbing route to Lhotse's summit diverges from the route for the Everest.
The five Czechs made their bid for the summit at midnight of the 8th/9th. But by 1:30 am on the 9th, they had gained only 100 meters towards the top. They now decided to retreat to C1, where they arrived at 4:30 pm that evening.
They were back in BC on the 10th. They had little time left for the climb; they abandoned their attempt to scale Lhotse.
