BC on northwest side of Lukla
C1 just over West Col

From Lukla, the team of two Britons, one Italian and two Sherpas trekked southeast to Zatrwa La to Hinku Khola, north to Rote and Tangnag, east to Mera La, the Hinku Valley and BC, which was on the northwest side of the lake where most teams place their BCs.

They established BC on 13 October, and made C1 and C2 at the customary sites on the 19th and 20th, respectively. As soon as they had set up C2 at the bottom of the SE Ridge, their Sherpas, Lhakpa Dorje and Pem Tenji, climbed up to 6600m on the ridge and reported back that snow conditions made the route impassable and there was avalanche danger.

The members did not go above C2. Everyone slept in C2 that night and descended to BC the next day, the 21st. They decided on the 22nd to abandon the climb and on the 23rd left BC to return to Kathmandu.

Ammara adds: "In the morning of the 21st after checking the meteo and snow early morning, we started going back to BC. Anyway, it was quite obvious from the afternoon of the 20th that going up was too dangerous. I even had to open the track going down! .. In the morning of the 22nd we had a visit from the late Chuwang Nima and (the independent American woman) Melissa Arnot; they had tea with us, and I am sure that our Sherpas told them that the situation "up there" was not good at all.

The Britons and Italian formally decided on the 22nd to abandon the climb and on the 23rd left BC to return to Kathmandu.
