Tapley Richards was the leader of a two-member Ama Dablam expedition organized by IMG. Richards and friend Frederick Botur, who went to Ama Dablam as an independent climber, were to be on the mountain at the same time; Richards had planned to "work with" Botur on Ama Dablam. Even when the IMG client, Richard Emmett, had to cancel his climb because of illness, Richards nevertheless went to Ama Dablam and climbed with Botur up to C1.

Botur went to C2 alone on 9 November, but became quite sick that evening. The next day he descended to BC, and he and Richards left on the 11th.
