High point at South Col of Everest.

Mondinelli's mission was to repair instruments installed on the South Col of Everest such as wind and humidity sensors for the research project being carried out at the research pyramid at Lobuche over the past years. These instruments had stopped functioning, and he had to fix or replace them. He said on his arrival in Kathmandu that after he accomplished their work, he would like to climb to the summit of Lhotse with the Austrian, Mrs. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. He is a very strong climber who has summited all 8000ers (including Cho Oyu twice).

He arrived at the Lhotse-Everest base camp on 5 May and soon afterwards climbed up to C2 and C3 to acclimatize and returned to BC. On 16 May he went from to C2 and the 17th to C3 and the South Col to do his repair work. He found that two batteries were not functioning and two solar panels had been damaged by small rocks that the winds had tossed against them. Mondinelli descended from the Col to C2 on the same day, the 17th, and to BC on the 18th while the defunct batteries and solar panels were carried down to the pyramid.

On the 20th, he went back up with replacements batteries to C2 and to the Col on the 21st, in four hours he had finished his work there, and he was able to leave BC on 22 May to return to Kathmandu. He made no attempt to scale Lhotse.
