Jagged Globe Everest Expedition 2009, Adele Pennington - 29 May 2009

The expedition went to the summit in two groups. In the first one, who left C4 at 9:10 pm on 18 May, were Benegas, Goodland, Robertson, Rodrigues, Waymark and Sherpas Pem Chhiring, Phurba Namgyal, Thundu, Nima Gyalzen and Nima Temba. Rodrigues and Nima Temba were about 50 meters above the Balcony (8500m) when Rodrigues contact lens suddenly popped out and now he could not see well; they retreated to C4. All the others went on up to to the top at 7:17 am on 19 May. They also went down to C4, then to C2 on the 20th and BC on the 21st.

The second summit party consisted of Grubb, Jakofcic, Moses, Pennington, Richmond, Spalding, Taylor, plus Tashi, Lila Bahadur Basnet, Mingma Tshering, another Mingma Tshering, Thomting, Pema Tshering, and Tshering Pemba. They left C4 at 8:30 on 19 May. When Spalding and Thomting were about 200m below the Balcony at 10:30 pm, Spalding felt ill and turned back to C4 with Thomting. Taylor got to 8050m, developed a chest infection and returned to C4 with Mingma Tshering. The rest of the party arrived at the summit between 5:30 and 7:30 pm on 20th May. They joined the dropouts at C4 for the night, then all descended to C2 on the 21st and to BC on the 22nd.

Other non-summiting memebrs:

Browne reached C2 on 27 April and descended with other members but never went up again; he failed to acclimatize and left the expedition on 13 May.

Craven also reached C2 on 27 April, but he was too slow and developed a chest infection; he left the team on 17 May.

Hodge got only halfway through the Icefall on 14 April; he left the expedition on 21 April for family reasons.

Thompson tore a muscle between his ribs from coughing very hard on 17 May; he got to C2 on the 22nd, then rested at BC till 17 May, when he had gotten only halfway through the Icefall and tore the same muscle; he returned to BC and left the team on 19th May.

Oxygen was used by all summit party members in C3 to their high points to C3. The Sherpas used it in C4 to high points to C3.
