Yeti Project on Myagdi Matha (6273m of Dhaulagiri IV) - 22 Oct 2008
Team's purpose was to sight and photograph yetis. They chose the SE Ridge of Myagdi Matha because the leader, Takahashi, and deputy Leader, Kuniaki Yagihara, had seen footprints along this ridge in autumn 1975, when they had been on an expedition to Dhaulagiri IV.
This team had three camps from which members spent all their time doing "nothing except waiting and watching" through binoculars (and drinking heavily), and occasionally checking automatic video cameras that were activated by anything moving. The members were rotated from one observation camp to another every seven or ten days. One of these camps was on the ridge at 4720m; the other two were on the west and east sides of the ridge's slopes.
The pictures they got were of footprints that, in Ohnishi's view, could have been made by any animal and distorted by the sun, and a fuzzy creature moving along the ridge. Ohnishi didn't and still doesn't believe there is such a thing as a yeti. The leaders want to return to do more of this "research."
The climbing part of the team's program was to get onto the ridge and set up one camp and series of cameras along the ridge. The highest point reached was 5100m, where the northernmost camera was placed. This point was reached on 5 Sept by all seven members, plus Rinji Sherpa and Narendra Magar.
No one made any attempt to reach the summit.
