C3 at Makalu La.

After their success on Dhaulagiri I, their return to Kathmandu and their decision to go to Makalu instead of Annapurna I, the team flew by helicopter to Hillary base camp on 16 May and immediately went to their BC at 5700m. They were still well acclimatized and moved up Makalu quickly, skipping the normal C1 and going directly to C2 (actually their C1) at 6400m on the 18th, and C3 at 7400m on the Makalu La on the 19th. They planned to make their C4 at 7600m on the 20th, but only Jaros got there; Hruby stopped at 7200m. "He had no power" and slept there in the tent of Ted Atkins, a British independent climber, during the nights of the 20th and 21st. Jaros went on up to camp at 7600m.

On the 21st, Jaros left the camp at 7600m at 1:30 am to go to the summit with Ted Atkins and Andrew Lock, Australian. Jaros reached the summit at 11:00-11:30 am, descended to the camp at 7600m at 2:00 pm and went on down to 7200m, where at 4:00 pm, he met Hruby. They both slept there that night. On the 22nd they were in BC, on the 23rd they moved down to a site where a helicopter could reach them and on the 25th they returned directly to Kathmandu.
