ABC on glacier below South Face
High point at South Face.
21 May Steck left ABC 7:00 am, waiting for clouds to clear on face and up to about 5850m (doesn't know exactly because no memory of incident) where he was hit on head by rock which shattered his helmet. No blood flowed but he was concussed and still has headache constantly - "helmet saved my life." Fell to 5500m glacier and was completely lost when became conscious again. "It was a pretty close call" said Oelz. Big white-out and didn't know where he was but after a while found crevasses and turned left and eventually Boesch met him. Steck could see his marker wand in distance. He was badly bruised especially back of head and spinal area; saw no rock fall before incident. This route is climbable says Steck but he doesn't know now whether he will go back to it again.
Support staff:
Boesch went up to 5700m bottom of face;
Oelz and Schwerzmann ABC only
Roth and Wulzinger BC only.
