원정 개요
BC at Khumbu Glacier
C4 at South Col.
Kwak, Lee Se-Jung, Park, Lhakpa Chhiri and Temba Sherpa left C4 at 23:00 hours on May 17, summited at 09:10 hours on May 18, stayed on summit about an hour, descended to C4 at 17:00 hours next day to C2. Kwak summited at about 12:00 hours, returned to C4 at about 19:00 hours. It was very windy. About 10 people were ahead of this team and may be about 40 people were behind them. The team returned to Kathmandu on May 25 and will leave on 29.
Accident: The members of Korean Chung-Dong Expedition found Kwak who was injured and hands were frostbitten. Also the members found Lee Sang-Bae frostbitten and rescued both climbers to Chung-Dong camp at South Col. According to a write-up posted on Mounteverest.net website on June 7, 2006 by HRA Everest BC clinic Dr. Luanne Freer, Kwak fell down 300m near the balcony (8600m). Kwak was minimally injured in the fall, but suffered severe frostbite. She was rescued and brought down to C2 and to BC on May 20. Kwak was evacuated by helicopter on May 21.
The leader of Chung-Dong Expedition Shin said Kwak left Nepal on May 23. No information available about another member Lee Sang-Bae.
Lhakpa Tshering and Temba Sherpa both are from Khumjung; Lee Se-Jung said Lhakpa had summited Everest twice.
The six-member Korean Dream Everest may not be a one expedition. Like the other Dream Teams of Asian Trekking, it may also be a collection of independent climbers or of small groups.
Sherpa summiters:
Lhakpa Tshering/Chiring, 17/7/76, Khumjung, Everest X2, Cho Oyu X1, Lhotse X1
Temba Sherpa, 25/6/78, Khumjung, 1st 8000er
Tenzing Dorje, 19/9/70, Phortse, Everest South 21/5/2000
Email from Luanne Freer - 25 July 2006
I do not know all of the details, but what I recall is that Ms. Kwak did indeed summit, that she fell somewhere around the balcony and tumbled 300m. The visibility was poor due to bad weather and she laid out for 6-1/2 hours until found by Sherpa from another expedition. A group of Sherpas from different expeditions carried her down from C4 and various members from other expeditions helped to care for her at C2 under my radio direction. She spent one night in our EBC hospital and was flown out by helicopter the following day.
Dawa Ongchu on Miss Jeong-Hye Kwak
Dawa said that Kwak told him that while descending from the summit of Everest on May 18, she met her climbing companion Sang-Bae Lee at Balcony. Lee asked Kwak to climb again with him to summit but she was not ready to do that. While the two Koreans were having argument their two Sherpas left them as their hands started getting cold. Kwak then started descending and slipped from a place near to the balcony (8600m) aout 500m below. On the fall Kwak lost her gloves, goggles, headlight and laid almost unconscious till the Sherpas of Korean Chung-Dong 100th Anniversary Expedition (led by Oh Seong-Hoan - Asian Trek). From C3 to BC, Kwak was carried in a stretcher by the Sherpas of Han's cleaning expedition (Korean Treks and Expedition). She spent a night at C2. Dawa said that both of her hands and feet were black and nose and cheeks were also badly frostbitten. But she could talk. She was taken to Kathmandu by helicopter after treatment at EBC probably on May 22.
