Reached couple hundred meters above C3 on 18th, then retreated because of poor snow conditions (unconsolidated and deep). Retreated to C2 that night. 19th to BC.

Independent team on Statham's permit and climbed same route as that of Canadian-US expedition.


5 Nov 2000 - David Hiddleston, leader of New Zealand expedition:

Blanchard and Mulvihill (his wife) turned back at about 5800m because of unconsolidated snow on the ridge. When Blanchard was descending, he called down to Statham, who was at base of S Ridge (at about 5300m) and ready to go up it and told Statham ridge not possible.
