C1 at steep part of ascent below Makalu La
C2 above Makalu La to right of glacier
C3 before icefall north of top.

15 May left C3 1:00 am for top which reached together after Italians and Koreans at 3:00 pm and returned to C3 at 12:00 midnight. Reached true summit (so did Italians and Koreans). 16th left C3 at about 10 am and 5m lower Mehnert sat down suddenly and died probably of pulmonary embolism (left in a small tent and covered it with stones on same day). Too late to return to ABC, slept in C1 which reached at 6:00 and 7:00 pm and to BC next day.

Route was a variation of the standard route: Makalu La-(Left of) NW Ridge.
