BC as planned (same general area).

Too much deep snow.

Roger Mandin's legs afflicted by apparent altitude illness and one member had minor injury.


Mailhe - 1 Nov 1983

Camp dates and altitudes Ok.
BC same area as Faure and Hillary BC's though not very close.
Route = SE Ridge classic route.
29 Sept and about 11 Oct to C2 - a little above to C2 to about 6300m about 11 Oct by Rubin and Mrs. Marie Claire. Not higher because too deep snow. Did not have much avalanche - on ridge.

2 Sherpas above BC. Route not very difficult, big problem was snow. Abandoned decision on 12 Oct. 1 member hurt by stone but apparently not serious.


Veziers, GHA - 20 Oct 1983

No success; reached C3 at about 6300m and then quit. Roger Mandin has gone back to France with his high altitude illness while father flies to Tumlingtar tomorrow. Expedition to fly from Tumlingtar to KTM about 28 Oct and leave Nepal 8 Nov.


Bernard, French Embassy - 16 Oct 1983

Helicopter today brought Roger Mandin and his father from place 2 days below BC to KTM. Roger had edema from altitude and then developed phlebitis in both legs. Roger goes to Delhi and have with embassy's doctor as soon as possible. Father Andre awaits rest of expedition in KTM.


Prachanda Shrestha, Tourism - 8 Oct 1983

1 member Roger Jacques Mandin very sick and taken to Makalu BC to send him to KTM. Please rush helicopter to Khanbari immediately says message of today from LO from K. Agents plan flight tomorrow. Cause of illness not given.

BC 22 Sept 5150m on Barun Glacier, LO reported that day. Health condition good except Mailhe, Andre Mandin and Francoise no so good.
