C1 at North Col (ice cave and tent).
30th 5 members left C5 6:30 am, on top 9:45 am & returned to C5 very tired at 12 noon. 2 May Weinzierle died in his sleep at 5 am; had been heard at 4-4:30 coughing alone in his tent & at 5:30 am friends look into his tent & found him lying in his sleeping bag, body cold, eyes open; was very very tired, last to arrive at C3 on 1 May; heart stopped. "All Germans had bad training - too much had been in Germany" & none went above C3. When he died, they all went to BC unable to go back up to C3 to remove him. After 9 days 3 Russians went up, dug a grave in the ice & buried him in it; covering him with ice.
Expedition reported to Nepalese government only 4 summiters because had paid for only 10 members total, not 12.
