The rock walls of Wind Valley on Wolchulsan are no longer filled with young climbers.

As modern society has come to value convenience above all else, climbing has gradually moved from the mountains into cities with indoor climbing gyms. 

Even on natural cliffs, bolts are now densely placed, and sportclimbing-where falls are carefully protected-has become the dominant form of modern climbing.

Yet alpinism, grounded in the spirit of adventure and challenge, is something fundamentally different.

It is a pursuit that embraces uncertainty and demands commitment at the highest level, carrying a unique and noble value that cannot be measured by competitive climbing alone.

Today, however, alpinism is enduring a long period of decline.

Is waiting our only option?

I have spent many years wrestling with that question.

Eventually, I reached a conclusion.

One of the most important ways to preserve the legacy of alpinism is to leave behind a record of our generation's mountaineering achievements, so that the young climbers who will one day return to the mountains can learn from those who came before them.

If we do not record our history, it will disappear.

Before the memories of our generation disappear, they must be preserved as a lasting record.

Through alpine research and seminars, we must create a body of knowledge that future generations can study and build upon.

Korea entered the era of Himalayan expeditions in the 1960s without first developing a tradition of geographical exploration. 

In many ways, we benefited from the achievements of others. 

Now the time has come for us to make our own contribution.

Our first task is to identify and fill the blank areas on the maps of the Greater Himalayan Region.

Someone has to do this work.

More than exceptional ability, it requires determination. 

More than speed, it requires perseverance.

With that conviction-and with humility-I have chosen to begin this journey of research.

월출산 바람계곡의 암벽에는 이제 더 이상 새로운 젊은이들이 들지 않고 있다.

​편리한 것을 추구하는 세풍이 클라이밍을 실내암장이 있는 도시로 끌어내렸고, 자연암벽조차 볼트가 촘촘히 박혀있으며, 추락하더라도 위험하지 않은 스포츠클라이밍이 현대 등산의 대세가 되었기 때문이다.

도전과 모험의 정신으로 목숨을 담보로 한 알피니즘은 불확실성을 제거한 여타 경기등반과는 다른 숭고한 가치를 가진 행위다.

그런데 요즘의 상황은 긴 침체의 시간을 보내고 있다. 

우리가 할 수 있는 유일한 방법이 기다림뿐인가.

많은 고민의 시간을 겪었다.

그리고 판단했다.

알피니즘의 명맥을 잇는 가장 중요한 일 중 하나가 미래에 돌아올 젊은이들을 위해 선배들의 등산활동을 알 수 있도록 기록으로 남겨 놓는 작업이라고 말이다.

기록하지 않으면 사라진다. 

사라질 위기에 처한 우리 세대의 기억을 기록으로 남길 것이다.

등산연구 활동과 세미나를 통해 후배들이 배울 수 있는 우리 것의 정보를 만들자. 

우리는 탐험의 역사를 갖지 못한 채 1960년대에 바로 히말라야 원정을 접했다.

그때는 무임승차했으니 이제 기여할 때가 온 것이다.

우선 광역 히말라야 지도의 공백부를 찾아 채워 나가는 일부터 시작한다.

누군가는 해야 될 일이기에 능력보다는 의지가, 빠름보다는 꾸준함이 더 필요하다는 자기 위안으로 용기를 내어 감히 연구활동을 시작한다.

月出産風渓谷の岩壁にはもう新しい若者たちが聞いていない。

利便性を追求する世風がクライミングを室内岩場のある都市に引き下げ、自然岩壁さえボルトが細かく打ち込まれており、墜落しても危険でないスポーツクライミングが現代登山の大勢になったためだ。

挑戦と冒険の精神で命を担保としたアルフィニズムは、不確実性を排除した他の競技登山とは違う崇高な価値を持つ行為だ。

ところが最近の状況は長い低迷の時間を過ごしている。

私たちができる唯一の方法が待つだけか。

多くの悩みの時間を経た。

そして判断した。

アルピニズムの名脈をつなぐ最も重要なことの一つが、将来に戻ってくる若者のために先輩たちの登山活動を知ることができるように記録として残す作業だと言う。

記録しないと消える。

消える危機に瀕した私たちの世代の記憶を記録として残すだろう。

登山研究活動とセミナーを通じて後輩が学ぶことができる私たちのものの情報を作ろう。

私たちは探検の歴史を持たないまま1960年代にすぐにヒマラヤ遠征に接した。

その時は無賃乗車したので、今寄与する時が来たのだ。

まず、広域ヒマラヤ地図の空白部を探して埋めていく日から始まる。

誰かがしなければならないことなので、能力よりは意志が、早くよりも着実さがより必要だという自己慰めで勇気を出してあえて研究活動を始める。

如今，年轻一代不再蜂拥至月泉山巴拉姆格谷的岩壁。

这是因为追求便利的潮流将攀岩带入了拥有室内攀岩馆的城市，而运动攀岩——即使是天然岩壁也布满了密集的岩钉，坠落也无危险——成为了现代登山的主流。

登山运动，即以挑战和冒险精神去冒生命危险，是一种具有崇高价值的行为，它不同于其他消除不确定性的竞技攀岩。

然而，目前的情况正处于长期的停滞期。

难道我们只能等待吗？

我经过了长时间的思考。

最终，我得出了一个结论。

我认为，保护登山运动遗产最重要的任务之一，就是记录前辈们的登山活动，以便未来的年轻人能够了解它们。

如果不加以记录，历史就会消逝。

我将为我们这一代人留下记忆，以免这些记忆被遗忘。

让我们通过登山研究活动和研讨会，收集关于我们遗产的信息，供后辈学习。

上世纪六十年代，我们踏上喜马拉雅山脉的探险之旅时，并没有探险的历史。

既然我们当时只是搭便车，现在是时候做出贡献了。

首先，我们将着手完善喜马拉雅山脉的综合地图，填补其中的空白。

既然这项工作必须有人去做，我便鼓起勇气开始这项研究，并坚信意志力比能力更重要，坚持比速度更重要。
